Melita Garza

Associate Professor of journalism at Texas Christian University, Dr. Melita Garza draws upon over two decades of experience working as a journalist across America to teach the history of journalism, diversity and the media, and business journalism. During her career as a journalist, Melita Garza worked at influential media institutions such as the L.A. Times, the Chicago Tribune, Bloomberg, and McKinsey & Co. She holds a BA in government from Harvard University and a MBA from Chicago University School of Business. She earned her PhD in journalism from UNC Chapel Hill where she focused on the history of twentieth century American journalism. Currently her research concentrates on the role of the media in shaping public conceptions of what it means to be American.

Melita Garza has also gained recognition for her journalism by earning a Pulitzer Prize nomination, a Best in the Business award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, and the Peter Lisagor award from the Society of Professional Journalists. She has continued to be recognized in her work in academia, winning the Margaret A. Blanchard Doctoral Dissertation Prize and earning invitations to speak at post-secondary educational institutions across the country.
